💡 The quick answer
Does it work? Possibly. One small 2015 study found rosemary oil worked about as well as 2% minoxidil for pattern hair loss after 6 months, but more research is needed.
How to use it: always dilute rosemary essential oil in a carrier oil (or use a ready-made blend), massage into the scalp, leave for an hour or overnight, then wash out.
How often: 2 to 3 times a week.
How long: be patient. Give it at least 3 to 6 months.
Easy option: BEAMARRY Rosemary Mint Growth Oil, the Rosemary Tea Tree Anti-Loss Lotion and Rosemary Tea Tree shampoo, all at Lime Light.
Worried about hair loss? See a doctor or dermatologist, especially if it is sudden, patchy or heavy.
What is rosemary oil?
Rosemary oil is an essential oil distilled from the leaves of the rosemary plant, the same fragrant herb you cook with. It has been used in hair and scalp care for centuries, and it exploded on social media when people started sharing their "rosemary hair growth" routines. Today you can buy it as a pure essential oil (which must be diluted), as ready-blended hair oils, or in shampoos, conditioners and scalp lotions.
Does rosemary oil really make hair grow?
The study behind the hype was published in 2015 in the journal SKINmed by Panahi and colleagues. It followed 100 adults with androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss) for 6 months. Half used rosemary oil and half used 2% minoxidil, a common hair loss treatment.

- The good news: after 6 months, both groups had a significant increase in hair count, with no significant difference between them. The rosemary group also reported less scalp itching.
- The fine print: it was one small study, neither group showed a change at 3 months, and it only looked at pattern hair loss. Larger, longer trials are still needed before anyone can promise results.
Our honest verdict: rosemary oil is a promising, low-cost addition to a healthy scalp routine, especially combined with regular scalp massage. It is not a miracle cure, and it will not fix hair loss caused by medical issues, stress, nutrition or hormones.
How do I use rosemary oil for hair growth?

- Dilute it: never put pure rosemary essential oil straight onto your skin. Mix a few drops into a carrier oil such as argan, jojoba or coconut, or use a ready-made blend like BEAMARRY Rosemary Mint Growth Oil.
- Patch test: apply a little to your inner arm and wait 24 hours to check for redness or irritation.
- Massage it in: part your hair into sections, apply to the scalp and massage with your fingertips or a silicone scalp massage brush for 3 to 5 minutes.
- Leave and wash: leave it for at least an hour, or overnight, then wash out with a gentle shampoo such as BEAMARRY Rosemary Tea Tree Energy Shampoo.
- Repeat: 2 to 3 times a week, and keep going for at least 3 to 6 months.

How much rosemary oil should I mix with a carrier oil?
Making your own blend? A common rule of thumb for the scalp is about 1 to 2% essential oil, which works out to roughly 1 to 2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil:

How long does rosemary oil take to work?
Hair grows slowly, so patience is everything. In the 2015 study, the difference only showed after 6 months. Take a photo of your hairline and parting before you start, then compare every month in the same light.

Rosemary oil, rosemary water or rosemary shampoo: which is best?
| Option | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Rosemary essential oil | Must be diluted in a carrier oil, then massaged into the scalp | DIY lovers who want control over the blend |
| Ready-made rosemary hair oil | Pre-blended and ready to massage in | Easy pre-wash or overnight treatments |
| Rosemary water | Rosemary leaves boiled in water, sprayed on the scalp | A lighter, home-made option; keep it in the fridge and use within a few days |
| Rosemary scalp lotion | A leave-in treatment applied straight to the scalp | Daily use without oily hair |
| Rosemary shampoo and conditioner | Cleanses and refreshes as part of your wash routine | Keeping the scalp clean and building a full routine |
The best results usually come from a routine: a rosemary shampoo to keep the scalp clean, a leave-in or oil treatment, and regular scalp massage.

Does scalp massage help hair growth?
Many people swear by it, and it is one of the easiest habits to build. Massaging your scalp for a few minutes a day feels great, helps you work products in evenly and lifts away build-up. A silicone scalp massage brush makes it easy in the shower or with your oil treatment.

Is rosemary oil safe?
For most people, diluted rosemary oil used on the scalp is well tolerated, but keep these points in mind:
- Always dilute essential oil, and patch test first.
- Stop using it if you get redness, itching, burning or a rash.
- Keep it away from your eyes, and out of reach of children.
- Check with your doctor first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have epilepsy, or have a sensitive skin condition.
⚠ When to see a doctor
See a doctor or dermatologist if your hair loss is sudden, patchy, heavy or comes with an itchy, painful or flaky scalp, or if you are worried. Hair loss can be linked to stress, hormones, iron or thyroid levels, medication and other health issues that need proper diagnosis. Rosemary oil is not a substitute for medical advice.
