💡 The quick answer
Choose 100% human hair: it cuts, colours, curls and blow-dries like a real client.
Hairdressing students: a 16" or 18" female head for cutting, colour and long-hair styling.
Barber students: the 8" male head with beard for fades, line-ups and beard work.
Afro and braiding: the 8" Afro head for cutting and shaping, and the 16" Afro head for braids, cornrows and weaves.
Do not forget: a clamp or tripod, plus scissors, clips and combs.

Why do hair and beauty students need a mannequin head?
A mannequin head (also called a training head or practice head) lets you practise every technique as many times as you need, at home or in class, before you work on a real client. You can section, cut, colour, curl, braid and blow-dry without pressure, then practise again. Most hairdressing and barbering courses ask students to bring their own.
Which mannequin head should I buy?
Choose by the course you are doing and the skills you need to practise:

| Mannequin head | Best for |
|---|---|
| 18" 100% human hair, female | Long-hair work: updos, braids, layers and long graduation |
| 16" 100% human hair, female | The all-rounder for cutting, blow-drying and styling |
| 16" 100% human hair, platinum | Colour practice: foils, balayage, toning and lightening |
| 8" 100% human hair, male with beard | Barbering: fades, clipper-over-comb, line-ups and beards |
| 8" 100% human hair, Afro | Cutting, shaping and styling textured hair |
| 16" Afro, braiding and weaving | Braids, cornrows, twists and weaves |
| Bald mannequin head | Wig making, wig styling and display |
Human hair or synthetic: which is better?
For training, 100% human hair wins every time. It behaves like a real client's hair: it cuts cleanly, takes colour and lightener, and holds heat styles like curls and blow-dries. Synthetic fibres can melt under heat and do not react to colour the same way. Every hair mannequin in this guide is 100% human hair.
💡 Buying tip
Most students need more than one head. Many start with a 16" head for cutting and styling, then add a platinum head for colour or a male head for barbering as the course progresses. Hair does not grow back, so plan your practice and keep a fresh head for your exams.

Do I need a clamp or a tripod?
Yes. A head that moves while you cut means uneven sections and lines. Choose a table clamp to fix your head to a desk or styling station, or a tripod stand to work at any height, anywhere. The tripod comes with a carry bag, which makes it ideal for taking to class.

What tools does a hairdressing student need?
Alongside your mannequin, build a basic toolkit:

| ✓ | Item | Why you need it |
|---|---|---|
| ☐ | Cutting scissors | A comfortable 5.5" pair, like the Mayas Oriental |
| ☐ | Thinning scissors | For texture and blending |
| ☐ | Sectioning clips | At least 12 |
| ☐ | Rat tail and cutting combs | For partings, foils and control |
| ☐ | Clipper (barber students) | A fading clipper such as the Wahl Magic Clip |
| ☐ | Mannequin clamp or tripod | To keep your head steady |

How do I look after a human hair mannequin?

- Detangle gently from the ends up to the roots before and after every session.
- Wash gently with a mild shampoo and conditioner in lukewarm water.
- Dry upright: pat with a towel and let it air-dry on its clamp or stand.
- Protect with a heat protector and moderate temperatures, because the hair does not grow back.
- Store well: keep it covered and out of direct sunlight between classes.
What about lash and make-up students?
